1. Background and Governance
Established in 1989, it is managed by the Nordic Council of Ministers and covers the five Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland), making it one of the world's earliest ecolabels.
The label features a "swan" as its symbol (representing Nordic nature and purity), making it easily recognizable to consumers.
2. Core Purpose
Help consumers quickly identify options with "lower environmental impact" at the point of purchase, reducing information asymmetry;
Encourage enterprises to optimize the environmental performance of products/services across the entire lifecycle (from raw materials to disposal);
Drive the entire industry chain to reduce resource consumption and pollution, supporting sustainable development goals in the Nordic region and globally.
3. Scope and Standards
Broad coverage: covers over 60 product and service categories, including household products (e.g., cleaners, furniture), textiles, food, electronics, building materials, tourism services (e.g., hotels), transportation, and more.
Core standards: based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), rigorously evaluating the environmental impact of products/services across all stages including raw material acquisition, production, transportation, use, and disposal, specifically including:
Resource consumption (e.g., water, energy, raw materials);
Pollutant emissions (e.g., greenhouse gases, chemicals, wastewater);
Waste generation and recycling;
Impact on biodiversity, etc.
Standards are updated regularly (typically every 3-5 years) to keep pace with technological advances and higher environmental requirements.
4. Certification Process
Enterprises apply voluntarily and must submit full lifecycle data, production processes, and other documentation for their products/services;
Independent third-party bodies (officially recognized by Nordic authorities) audit the application to verify compliance with the standards of the relevant category;
Upon passing the audit, enterprises may use the "Nordic Swan" label on their products/services, with validity typically lasting 3 years, during which they are subject to periodic monitoring and re-audits to ensure continued compliance.
5. Significance and Impact
For consumers: provides a reliable "green guide," enabling more environmentally friendly choices without specialized knowledge;
For enterprises: certification enhances brand competitiveness and provides access to the Nordic market and environmentally conscious international markets (the label enjoys high recognition across Europe and globally);
For the environment: reduces the overall ecological burden by promoting low-environmental-impact products/services at scale, driving the transition toward a "circular economy."
